Lady Racers close out 2003 with 78-72 loss at IPFW

The Murray State Lady Racers closed out 2003 on a bad note, taking a hard-fought 78-72 loss at IPFW (Indiana-Purdue-Fort Wayne) this afternoon.
IPFW (3-8) took an early 8-2 lead before Murray State fought back, using a 9-3 run to tie the game at 11-11 with 10:53 left in the first half. The lead seesawed for the rest of the period, with the Lady Racers (4-5) taking a 32-31 lead into the locker room at halftime.
MSU took its largest second-half lead when senior guard Jenny Bowden hit a banked three to give the Lady Racers a 45-42 lead with 14:54 left in the game.
The Mastodons battled back, but Murray State cut the IPFW lead to 53-52 with 9:39 left on a layup by freshman forward Angela Mullins, but IPFW scored four unanswered points to go up by five.
MSU tied the game at 65-65 when junior guard Rebecca Remington hit a layup with 3:47 left, then took a lead when junior forward Kaleena Miller hit a free throw with 2:50 left, but the Mastodons went on a 7-0 run to seal the game.
Murray State was led by Mullins, who had a season-high 14 points and eight rebounds. Senior guard Stacy Holmes added 12 points and six rebounds, while sophomore center Lori Trumblee had 11 points and a team-high nine rebounds.
Junior guard Brittany Park handed out a team-high four assists and swiped a co-game-high three steals.
Murray State returns home for a two-game home stand, hosting regional rival Western Kentucky on Friday at 7 p.m. and East Carolina on Monday at 7 p.m.
