Racer defense shines vs. APSU, but Lady Govs hold on for 3-1 win

The Murray State women's volleyball team battled toe-to-toe with Austin Peay tonight in Racer Arena and had more than enough defense to do the job, but fell on offense, losing the match 3-1 (30-23, 26-30, 30-22, 30-22) in Ohio Valley Conference action.
Murray State (2-8, 0-3 OVC) had 101 digs to APSU's 92, led by freshman libero Heather Norris, who had a match-high 29, just one dig short of her second 30-dig match of the year.
Freshman outside hitter Alison Mugler used 21 digs to complete a double-double with 13 kills, while freshman outside hitter Alyssa Groves had 16 digs and freshman defensive specialist Ashley Meagher had 14.
On offense, the Racers were led by freshman outside hitter Lisa Forchee, who had 15 kills and only three errors. Junior middle blocker Katie Kemezys had 14 blocks and only two errors in the match.
Kemezys added a co-match-high six blocks, while freshman setter Kelsey Hubert had five to go with a match-high 53 assists. Junior middle blocker Holly Jansen added four blocks for MSU.
Austin Peay (5-9, 2-1 OVC) was paced by Kamaria Alexander, who had a double-double with 18 kills and 19 digs. Amber Stein added 12 kills, while Ashley Genslak had a double-double with 11 kills and 121 digs and Jaimie Thill added 10 kills.
Laura Wussow served up five aces in the match, while Kristen Kirch had three. Kirch had a team-high 24 digs in the match, while Caroline Frens had 16 and Kelsey McNalley had 13. Wussow also had six blocks for the Lady Govs.
"We played really outstanding defense," said MSU head coach David Schwepker. "We need everything to come together, and we aren't quite there yet. We did not play well offensively tonight. We are still working on getting the whole game together."
Austin Peay had 69 kills to Murray State's 54, and had a .214 attack percentage to the Racers' .148.
Murray State closes out this four-match homestand on Tuesday at 7 p.m. when the Racers host OVC upstart Tennessee State.
