Wes Cunningham and Tyler Owen combined for seven hits, but Evansville was able to push across three runs in the second and sixth innings and escape Reagan Field with a 6-5 victory over Murray State Wednesday afternoon.
The Purple Aces (6-24) found their swing at the plate in the second inning as two of the first three hitters reached on singles through the left side. Nate Smith plated the first run with a bloop down the right-field line and Ryan Fleming followed with an RBI single through the right side. Peter Tountas drove in the third run of the inning with a sacrifice bunt.
The 'Breds (11-15) answered right back in the home-half of the inning as they pushed across four runs. Tyler Owen started things with a single through the left side and Matt Scheer delivered a one-out single through the right side. Andrew Miller plated the first run with a single up the middle. Elliot Frey walked to load the bases and Kyle Tiernan drove in a run with a groundout to first. A wild pitch scored the third run and Zach Noonan scored the fourth run with a single through the left side.
MSU took advantage of an Aces error in the thrid inning to push across an unearned run. Owen started things with a one-out single and went to third when a routine double-play ball went through the legs of the second baseman. Scheer made them pay with a sacrifice fly to right field.
UE regained the lead in the sixth as Andy Pascoe delivered a two-run home run to left and Alex Acheson followed three batters later with an RBI single through the right side.
Wade Kapetyn (1-2) earned the victory after giving up five runs, four earned, on nine hits over five innings. Anthony Stacy (1-1) took the loss after surrendering one run on four hits over two innings of relief. J.R. Carbonell (3) picked up the save after giving up just one hit over 1.1 innings.
Cunningham led the offensive effort by going 4-for-5, while Owen went 3-for-5 with a pair of runs scored. Miller added two hits and drove in his first run of the season.
The 'Breds return to the diamond on April 12 as they open a pivotal three-game series against Eastern Illinois. The series gets underway at 1 p.m. at Reagan Field.
