Women?s Tennis Notches First Victory of Season

The Murray State women's tennis team picked up its first victory of the season Friday night as they handed Evansville a 5-2 defeat at the Tri-State Athletic Club.

The Racers (1-1) continued their success in doubles as Angela McGahee and Anne Pennington improved to 2-0 on the season with an 8-5 victory at No. 1. Adriana Alvarez and Lyndsay Ottosen clinched the doubles point with an 8-5 victory at No. 2.

In singles action, freshman Cassidy Cunitz remained unbeaten at No. 2 singles with a hard-fought 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 victory over Ashton Schwerin.

Alvarez helped push the Racers closer to victory with a 6-2, 6-3 victory at No. 4 and Alexis Webb clinched the victory with a convincing 6-0, 6-2 victory at No. 5.

Sophomore Ashley Pierson split her first two sets at No. 6 singles before winning the match in a pro-set tiebreaker 10-8.

The Racers return to the courts on Saturday afternoon as they take on Ball State at 1 p.m.
