The Murray State Rifle squad picked up right where they left off in 2009 by winning their first match of 2010 over visiting Mississippi at the Pat Spurgin Range in Murray, Ky.
The final tally sheet showed the Racers in front by a 4620 - 4549 score.
The Racers were led in both guns by freshman Emily Quiner as she carded a match-high in both smallbore (580) and air rifle (588). Kasey Meyer was solid in air rifle with a 583, while he turned in a 578 in smallbore. In her first match as a member of the first team, Caroline Barber fired a 586 in air rifle.
"Emily just continues to do a great job," MSU head coach Alan Lollar said. "Along with Kasey, they make up a solid core for the team".
Lollar also liked what he saw from Barber in her first try with the first team.
"You just have to really be impressed with the job that Caroline has done," Lollar said. "She started to turn it on just before Christmas and has not missed a beat."
"As a team we are showing remarkable consistency," Lollar added. "I've told them since day one, that hard work is eventually rewarded. This is a very hard working group of shooters."
The Racers are back at home Sunday at 9 a.m. for a match with Nebraska.
The Cornhuskers are coached by former MSU Olympian Morgan Hicks.
