Box Score
The Racers win was the first in the Ohio Valley Conference this season and improves their record to 5-11 overall and 1-5 in league action. Red-shirt freshman Jessica Winfrey was also strong for MSU, with 12 points and eight boards. Junior Kayla Lowe was next on the scoring list with eight points.
The Racers were the first to get on the scoreboard at 17:50 left to go in the half, with a three by Robinson that started a 5-2 run in the first three minutes. The Gamecocks then started a 12-0 run that gave them a nine-point advantage with just over 10 minutes left to play in the stanza. Robinson took the game in her hands and started a 13-4 run for MSU, scoring the first 11 points of the run, with three-straight triples. The run spanned until there was 6:50 in the half, without a Gamecock field goal, and left the Racers trailing by one (19-20). JSU followed with an 8-0 run over a two minute span to regain a 28-21 advantage, but the final push of the half came from MSU, as they went on a 12-3 run in the final three minutes to take a 33-31 lead into the locker room.
The second half saw the Racers open with a 4-0 run to increase their lead to six. JSU kept fighting through the half, but was never able to cut the deficit to less than two points. MSU earned its first double-digit lead of the game with 10:48 remaining and increased that advantage to as many as 18 points for the rest of the game.
The Racers had an impressive shooting night again at Pete Matthews Coliseum, making 52.8 percent of their shots (59.3 in the second half) and 42.9 of those from beyond the arc (60 in the second). MSU also took advantage of their trips to the charity stripe, making 15-of-16 attempts, while the Gamecocks made just half of the same number of attempts. JSU earned an advantage on the boards, with a 43-33 mark, including a 22-4 lead on the offensive side.
The Racers will remain on the road for an OVC game in Cookeville, Tenn., against the Golden Eagles of Tennessee Tech. Tip-off is schedule for 5:15 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 15 at the Eblen Center.
Notes: Sophomore Tessa Elkins earned her first career start… Robinson had her ninth double-digit point performance of the season in the first 12 minutes of the game…Robinson also tallied a career-high 23 points, including six triples, in the opening half…the last MSU player to tally 30+ points in a game was Amber Guffey (35), March 6, 2009 vs. Austin Peay at the OVC Championship…Robinson becomes just the fourth MSU player to score 40+ points, joining Ashley N. Hayes(46), Joi Scott (43), Karen Johnson (40) and Jennifer Parker (40)…the nine three's hit by Robinson breaks the record of eight set by Megan Fuqua and her current coach Ashley B. Hayes.
