Murray State cross-country competed at the Ohio Valley Championships Nov. 2. The race was held at Eagle Trace golf course in Morehead, Ky. The women placed fifth, dropping a spot from their fourth place finish in 2012 while the men improved upon their 11th place finish from a year ago, placing eighth, the highest ever under Head Coach Jenny Severns.
Emma Gilmore was the top scorer for the Racers in the 5K race. Gilmore paced the Racers with a 14th place finish out of 90 runners to earn Second Team All-OVC honors. Her time of 18:43.80 was a personal best. Abbie Oliver and Carolyne Tanui also placed in the top-20. Oliver's time of 19:04.32 was good for 18th placed while Tanui was two spots behind her in 20th with a time of 19:05.30. Brittany Bohn (25th) and Alicyn Hester (38th) rounded out the scoring for the Racers, who finished with 115 points.
Following the race coach Severns said, "We had some people race really tough today. I am very happy for Emma earning All-OVC for the first time. We will continue to work hard so we can do better next year."
Eastern Kentucky took home the women's title scoring 29 points. The tight race saw the third through fifth place teams finish just 15 points apart.
For the men it was freshman Evan Staviski leading the way. In the 8K race he placed 36th in the field of 92 with a personal best time of 26:33.04, the second fastest by a Racer this season. Staviski was followed by Lucas Prather (42nd) and Cole Cisneros (50th) who completed the race in 26:49.69 and 27:11.16 respectively. Neil Yockey and Clayton Hall completed the scoring for the Racers, finishing next to each other in 61st and 62nd place.
MSU's score of 251 was the lowest since 2009 (236) when only 10 teams competed in the conference. Eastern Kentucky won the event for the eighth straight year, scoring 16 points.
About the men's team, coach Severns said, "It was a good day for our men. There are a few areas we can improve, but for the most part they ran really tough. I was super excited for Lucas and Evan. To run a personal best in these conditions is really amazing."
The Eagle Trace golf course took on some rain this past week, leading to a muddy course and slower overall times.
