The Murray State rifle team got back into the swing of things recently at Jacksonville State, defeating the Gamecocks, 4689-4647, at the Gamecock Rifle Range in Jacksonville, Alabama, in the Racers' first match since November of last year.
"I thought we shot well as a team this weekend and it was a good first match after the break for us," said head coach Alan Lollar. "Barbara was solid for us again, as she has been all year, and MacKenzie we very consistent. Alathea had a very fine air rifle and is positioning herself to do big things at the right time year. Kelcy and Shelby also had nice days for us and it was just good to see Meike back out there competing in a match setting."
Senior Barbara Schläpfer was once again a stalwart for the Racers by leading all shooters with a 589 smallbore and a 595 air rifle for a total score of 1184. MacKenzie Martin paired a 587 smallbore with a 585 air rifle to finish the day second overall with an 1172, while Alathea Sellars was third overall at 1169 with a 578 smallbore and a 591 air rifle.
This Saturday, the Racer will host the annual Withrow Invitational that will feature some of the nation's top teams including defending national champion Kentucky. Following the Withrow, things will pick up for the Racers with the OVC Championships (Feb. 2-3), the NCAA Qualifier (Feb. 17) and the NCAA Championships (Mar. 8-9) all in the span of six weeks.
