Murray State men’s cross country ran at the NCAA Southeast Regional in Lexington, Ky.
At the 2021 NCAA Southeast Regional, the Murray State men's cross country team finished 24th of 30 teams at the E.P. Tom Sawyer State Park in Lexington, Kentucky.
The men's team jumped up to a 10,000m race distance for the Southeast Regional Championships on Friday, Nov. 12.
Leading the way for the racers was junior Jorge Ruiz who went through the 8k in 25:33, only 24 seconds off of his 8k race PR. He then continued the additional 2,000m and finished 127th with a time of 32:14.
Working together throughout the race was senior Caleb Kawasaki and junior Vicente Correa. Both went through the 5k together around 16:23 before Caleb broke away, passing 17 additional people in the second half of the race. Kawasaki finished 145th and Correa 157th. Rounding out the men's team was Jordan Higgins, Nathan Quinn, and Jarod Willis, all of which ran lifetime PR's for the 10k - including their 10k races on the track.
"To see the men make this big of a turn around after the conference meet was great. Jorge was competitive and locked in mentally right from the start. Caleb, Jordan, and Nathan have always been great at being patient at the start of the race and working their way up. That was a necessary skill when competing against such a densely competitive field. Overall I am really going to miss this men's team. We are graduating my first recruiting class at Murray State and I have been able to watch these men grow and improve so much over the years. I am really proud of what they accomplished today," said distance coach Jordan Johnston.
