Win moves MSU into sole possession of third-place in the OVC

The Murray State women's basketball team outscored Austin Peay, 12-5, in overtime to top the Govs, 68-61, Wednesday night at the CFSB Center in Murray, Kentucky.

·      Murray State fell behind early in the game 12-5, but ended the first on a 15-2 run to lead after the first. After trailing for most of the second and all of the third, Murray State began the fourth on a 15-4 run to retake the lead.

·      Austin Peay tied the game with 29 seconds left on a 3-pointer from Yamia Johnson to eventually send the game to overtime after Hannah McKay's seeming game-winner was called off due to a travel with three seconds left.

·      In overtime, Austin Peay scored the first basket just seconds into the extra period, but that would be its last field goal until just two seconds remained in the game. In between, Murray State scored 12 points including going 6-for-6 at the free throw line.

·      Murray State was 25-for-32 overall at the free throw line on the night, thanks, in part, to 28 Austin Peay fouls. On the other side, the Racers committed just 10 fouls, lowering their nation leading per game average to 11.3

·      On the glass, the Racers out-rebounded the Govs, 41-30, helping to increase their rebounding margin per game of 9.9, the 10th best average in the nation.

·      Katelyn Young tied her career high from earlier this season of 31 points, while also adding eight rebounds. Young was followed by McKay who notched her second double-double of the season with a new career-high of 21 points and a career-best tying 12 boards. Alexis Burpo also came up huge for Murray State, pulling down 11 boards to go along with eight points.

·      With the win, Murray State moved into sole possession of third place in the OVC. They now stand 0.5 games out of second place and 1.5 games out first. The win also puts an end to a five-game skid against the Govs and gives the Racers their first overtime win of the season.

On Saturday, Murray State travels to UT Martin for its penultimate road trip of the regular season. Tip-off from the Elam Center in Martin, Tennessee is scheduled for 1 p.m.
