Season Opener Nets Fourth Place Finish For The Racers
8/30/2024 8:18:00 PM | Men's Cross Country
The Murray State Cross Country Squads competed Friday evening at the Osage Center in Cape Girardeau
The Murray State Men's Cross Country teams came home with a fourth place finish in the 2024 season opener at the Redhawk Invitational, hosted by Southeast Missouri State at the Osage Center in Cape Girardeau, Mo.
The Racers placed fourth behind SEMO, Columbia (MO) and Southern Illinois.
Gabe Russell, Nick Schmitz and Dylan Ellis gave the Racers a trio of top-20 finishes. Russell placed 13th (16:03), Schmitz was 16th (16:10) Dylan Ellis was 19th (16:22) on the 5K course.
"Overall I saw some good stuff during the men's race," said head coach Jordan Johnston. "Ben Crask had a standout performance and raced with a lot of confidence in the second half and I'm so happy for him to have that mental break through. Seeing our top-3 made up of underclassmen is really exciting and I can't wait to see how they transition to the 8k. Overall the team took some risks and while their legs were beat up from the week's training, the effort was there. They do so well working in packs during practice and we will make more of an emphasis on pack-running during. That's going to be our primary goal in the first 8k of the season."
MSU is back in action (Sept. 14) at the UTM Invitational staged at Graham Park in Union City, Tenn.
