Racers Top Gamecocks in Home Match

Murray State returns at Ohio State.
Murray State Rifle fired a 4714 to defeat the Jacksonville State Gamecocks on Sunday morning at the Pat Spurgin Rifle Range in Murray, Kentucky.Â
The Navy & Gold finished the match with a 2345 in smallbore and a 2369 in air rifle for a 4714 aggregate, compared to scores of 2337 in smallbore, 2369 in air rifle, and a 4706 aggregate from the Gamecocks. Â
Sophomore Carlotta Salafia was the top shooter for the Racers and the top performer in all three categories, putting up a 590 in smallbore and 599 in air rifle for an aggregate of 1189. A pair of freshmen, Lea Soulé and Abby Ballard, also appeared in the top five, with Soulé taking fourth and Ballard taking fifth. Soulé finished with a 586 smallbore, 591 air rifle, and 1177 aggregate, while Ballard finished with 585 smallbore, 589 air rifle, and 1174 aggregate.   Â
"I always try to do what I know," said Salafia. 'I know if I follow my process and keep calm, I can do well."
Junior Caroline Martin claimed sixth individually with an aggregate of 1174. She placed sixth in smallbore with a 584 and seventh in air rifle with a 590. Â
"We've stressed a lot of our mental processes this season," said Martin. "And I think we've done a good job of living the Murray State way and injecting it into all of our lives."
Mallory Johnson and Ainsley McFarland rounded out the top ten for the Racers, taking ninth and tenth individually. Johnson fired a 581 smallbore and 589 air rifle for an aggregate of 1170 while McFarland fired scores of 584 and 585 for a 1169 aggregate.Â

The Racers are back in action for a pair of matches next weekend in Columbus, Ohio. Murray State will face the host Ohio State Buckeyes on Saturday, Nov. 8 at 9 a.m. CT before facing UTEP the following morning at 9 a.m. CT. Â
