MSU finishes 9-11 in the Missouri Valley Chase
The Murray State Racers late-game rally came up short Sunday 70-60 to the Belmont Bruins at the Curb Event Center in Nashville, Tennessee.
The Racers (15-16) finish 9-11 in their third season in the Missouri Valley Conference and now wait for their first round assignment at State Farm Arch Madness as the MVC Tournament is played in St. Louis.
Nick Ellington led the Racers with a 19-point performance on 5-of-10 from the field and he was only one miss from the free throw line from making 10. JaCobi Wood added 12 points and seven assists. AJ Ferguson added a team-high eight rebounds.
Having a poor first half when they shot just 31 percent (9-of-29), the Racers trailed the Bruins in the regular season finale 41-22.
The Racers hit the Bruins with an impressive spurt of basketball when they began to get to the free throw line and make them, as Alden Applewhite and Ellington each hit a pair to make it a seven point game at 8:32. The Racers turned a pair of defensive stops into easy baskets, each finished by AJ Ferguson and suddenly MSU has a 15-2 run and Belmont's lead was 54-51 at 7:37.
The Racers got another pair of free throws from Ellington to keep it a three-point game, but they were never able to get any closer in the final 5:45.
Game Notes
Head into the MVC Tournament, the Racers were 7-5 in home games, 6-8 on the road and 2-3 in neutral site games.
Ellington has 899 points at the D-I level in 94 career games.
Ellington's quest to get to the 400 rebound mark has him at 360.
A career .562 shooter from the free throw line, Ellington has found the touch of late and is 26-of-35 and is above 74 percent in the last four games.
