Murray State's bid for three straight wins fell just short on Saturday night at Racer Arena, as the Racers dropped a five-set battle to Drake (19-25, 25-18, 25-17, 19-25, 10-15).
After dropping the first set, the Racers (5-19, 3-9 MVC) put together two winning sets while hitting over .400, but ultimately dropped the final two sets.
After a career night Friday against UIC, Lily Evans once again led the way for the Racers with a new career-high 20 kills on a .341 hitting percentage. Evans also added four digs and two block assists, while Anne Makowski chipped in 19 kills and Paige Brock ran the offense with 48 assists and nine digs.
Drake (12-12, 7-5Â MVC) came out firing in the opening set, hitting .500 as a team behind five kills apiece from Shay McMillen and Caroline Smith to take it 25-19. The Racers answered in the second by jumping out to an early 5-1 lead and never looking back, riding six kills from Evans and a .433 hitting clip to even the match with a 25-18 win.
The third set was a back-and-forth affair that featured eight ties, and with the score knotted at 15, Murray State closed on a 10-2 run behind kills from Evans, Makowski and Alexa Watts to take a 2-1 match lead. Evans posted seven kills in the frame as the Racers hit .406.
The Racers appeared to be in control of the fourth set as well, building an 8-4 lead early and still holding a 16-15 edge late, but the Bulldogs scored nine of the final 12 points to take it 25-19 and force a decisive fifth. Drake carried that momentum into the tiebreaker, building a 7-4 lead and holding off every Racer push the rest of the way to close out the match 15-10.
Maezi Snyder led Murray State with six blocks, including one solo and five assists, as the Racers outblocked Drake 7-5 on the night. Ada Tamturk handled 31 serve receptions without an error while adding eight digs and an ace, Samantha Nelson led the team with 15 digs and Watts chipped in six kills, 10 digs and three block assists.
Drake was led by McMillen, who finished with 19 kills on .500 hitting and three aces, while Katie Quick dished out 50 assists for the Bulldogs. The match featured 22 ties and 10 lead changes.
The Racers are back in action Friday at Evansville.
