Lady Racers drop game in final minute to Northern Iowa

The Murray State Lady Racers led visiting Northern Iowa 56-54 when senior guard Rebecca Remington lit a layup with 1:05 left in the game, but the Panthers' Jessie Biggs hit a three-pointer and the UNI hit its free throws down the stretch to wrest the 60-56 win from MSU.
The Lady Racers took two shots in the last minute, but were unable to get the rebounds and were forced to foul Northern Iowa. MSU grabbed only three offensive rebounds in the game.
Murray State (1-2) took a 10-point lead in the first half when Remington completed a three-point play to give the Lady Racers an 18-8 lead with 8:34 left in the period.
The Panthers (2-0) then went on a 14-2 run to take a 22-20 lead with 1:12 left in the half, but freshman guard Shaleea Petty hit two free throws to tie the game before UNI's Alex Cook hit a basket to give the Panthers a 24-22 lead with 36 seconds left in the half. Remington hit a trey as time ran out to give MSU a 25-24 halftime lead.
Remington hit the first basket of the second half, but Northern Iowa scored the next nine points to take a 33-27 lead, its largest lead of the game, with 16 minutes left.
The Lady Racers went on a 14-4 run over the next 3-1/2 minutes to take a 41-37 lead, capped by a Petty jumper with 12:20 left in regulation.
The lead seesawed from there, with MSU taking its 56-54 lead before Biggs hit her three-pointer. The Lady Racers came back down the court but missed its shot and UNI grabbed the rebound. Murray State fouled Cook, and she hit one of two free throws to give the Panthers a 58-56 lead with 33 seconds left.
MSU came back down and missed another shot, fouling Cassie Hager with 10 seconds left. She hit both of her shots for the final 60-56 decision.
Remington led all scorers with 24 points on 9-for-16 shooting and a perfect 5-for-5 from the line, and had a game-high three steals. Petty added 18 points and had a team-high three assists. Sophomore guard Ashley Hayes had a team-high seven rebounds, while senior forward Kaleena Miller had five.
For Northern Iowa, two Panthers had double-doubles, as Hager had 22 points and 11 rebounds to go with a game-high five blocked shots, while Cook had 13 points and 13 rebounds to go with a game-high seven assists. Emily Berry also had six assists for UNI.
Murray State visits Ball State on Sunday at 1 p.m. CT.
