Racers Fall to No. 21 Florida State in Opening Game of Coors Rocky Mountain Invitational

Both teams opened the game ready to play as both hit three-point shots on its first position. The Racers kept the score tied or trailed by two points for the opening 4:30 of the game. The Seminoles took a four-point advantage with 15:30 remaining on the clock with shots from the free-throw line. Amber Guffey then tied the game at nine with a contested three-point shot that drew a foul for a four-point play for MSU. The close game resumed for the next four minutes before FSU started a 7-0 run to take the lead for good (14-21).
Both teams then turned up the defense and held each other to just four points over the next 3:30. The Seminoles then expanded their lead to 11 (18-29), with a 4-1 run over a two-minute span. MSU kept fighting and kept FSU scoreless for the next three minutes, while going on a 5-0 run of its own to cut the advantage to six (23-29). Both teams then kept each other without a field goal from 4:25 to 2:09, but FSU ended the half with an 11-3 run to take a 41-27 lead into the locker room.
The Racers and the Seminoles came out of the locker room firing, as FSU went on a quick 4-0 run before MSU hit two-straight three-pointers for a 6-0 run of its own, all in the first two minutes of play. The Seminoles then built their lead to 13 with an 11-0 run over the next 2:30. FSU then increased the pressure and did not let the Racers score more than three points over the next 7:30 while tallying 18 of its own to increase the lead to 36 points.
Defense then became the name of the game, as both teams held each other scoreless from the eight minute mark until FSU broke the streak with two free-throws with six minutes remaining. The teams kept up the pressure and scored just 19 points in the final six minutes of the game, as the Seminoles earned the 85-50 victory.
Points in the paint and rebounding seemed to be the key factors in the game, as FSU earned 46 points in the paint to the Racers 12. The Seminoles also out-rebounded MSU 49-25, including a 17-5 mark on the offensive side of the court. The Racers also struggled hitting their shots, with a 32.1 (17-of-53) shooting percentage in the game to FSU's 50.8 (32-of-63) shooting percentage.

Notes: Senior Angela Mullins set a career best with her three blocks...senior Paige Guffey added to her career-high six rebounds against Mid-Continent and tallied seven against the Seminoles...as a team the Racers had a season-best five blocks, including three from Mullins and one each from Paige Guffey and Hayes.
