Box Score
The Racers (2-6, 0-2 OVC) were led by junior Kayla Lowe and red-shirt freshman Jessica Winfrey. Lowe tallied a season-best 23 points and added five blocks, while Winfrey recorded her first career double-double. The Marion, Ark., native tallied 11 points and 10 rebounds, while adding two assists and a steal.
For the first time since the Nov. 15 game at the CSFB Center, the Racers were in control for most of the opening stanza and went into the locker room with a 27-22 advantage. Both teams opened the game with a three-pointer on their opening possessions, but then held each other scoreless for a long stretch. Murray State was the first to break the streak, scoring with just over 17 minutes left to play and went on a 4-2 run before the Eagles (6-3, 2-0 OVC) were able to garner another field goal.
Morehead then countered with a 7-0 run over a three minute span to take a 10-7 advantage. The Racers then followed with a 7-0 of their own over the next two minutes to take the lead for good in the half. Murray State added a final run over a four-minute span (9-0) to push the lead out to as many as 10 points before heading into the intermission with a five-point advantage.
The Eagles came out with strong defense and offense in the second half, going on a 16-5 run in the first seven minutes of the half. The run erased Murray State's lead and gave Morehead a six-point advantage. The Eagles did not relinquish the lead through the rest of the game and built the advantage up to nine. Several times during the stanza the Racers cut the lead to two or three points, but each time they did so Morehead State would go on a short run to rebuild its lead.
For the second game in a row, Murray State shot over 40 percent from the field. The Racers shot 44.9 percent from the field and were 53.8 percent from beyond the arc. However, the Eagles shot 45.6 percent from the field and earned a 35-33 advantage in the rebounding column. Both teams increased their defense in the game forcing a total of 51 turnovers, with Murray State earning 22 points off turnovers and the Eagles netting 20.
The Racers will have a full week off for finals before playing the last game of a seven-game road trip that started Nov. 17 at Evansville. Murray State will face Purdue, Sunday, Dec. 12 at 2 p.m. at Mackey Arena.
Notes: This was the first game since Nov. 15, 2010 when the Racers have held a team to under 25 points in the opening half of action…it was also the first game that both teams were under 30 since Feb. 18, 2010 against Southeast Missouri.
