Breds Fall at Memphis

Murray State saw its five-game winning streak come to an end Wednesday night as the Breds dropped a 10-1 decision to Memphis at FedEx Park.
The Breds (24-22) got on the board in the first inning as Bryan Propst chopped a ball over the head of the third baseman with two outs. Colton Moore followed with a run-scoring double into the gap in right center.
The Tigers (25-24) responded in the second as a pair of hits put two runners in scoring position with nobody out. Phillips scored the first run when his grounder to third was thrown away at first. With two outs, Drew Martinez plated two runs with a triple to center and Chad Zurcher followed with a run-scoring single up the middle.
UM added to the lead in the third as Rick Russell homered to left center to start the inning. Jacob Wilson followed with a double down the left-field line and scored on heath Hatfield's double off the wall in right center.
The Tigers extended the lead in the sixth as a pair of walks and base hit loaded the bases. After a passed ball scored the first run, Tyler Huelsing plated two runs with a single up the middle.
UM added a run in the eighth as Martinez drove in a run with a groundout to short.
Hatfield (4-3) picked up the victory after allowing one run on six hits and six strikeouts over five innings. Marc Harmon (1-7) took the loss after allowing four runs, one earned, on four hits over two innings.
Moore, Kyle Tiernan and Drew Pixley each collected two hits, while Wes Cunningham singled in the eighth inning to set the single-season record with his 82nd hit of the season.
The Breds return to the diamond Saturday afternoon as they play their final home games of the season against Morehead State. The series gets underway with a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday.
