Walks cost the Murray State softball team Sunday afternoon as the Racers gave out nine free passes in a 14-6 loss in five innings at UT Martin.
Jenna Bradley put the Racers on the scoreboard in the top of the first inning with her second home run of the weekend, a rainbow shot that just cleared the fence in left center. Lauren Buch kept the inning alive for the Racers two batters later, lining a double inside the foul line in right field with two outs. She came in to score a batter later as Ellyn Troup the left field wall and advanced to second on a throwing error. Leslie Bridges was awarded first base after being hit by a pitch and advanced to third on a single to center field by Alaina Zloty that scored Troup from second. The Racers fourth and final run of the inning came on a wild pitch that allowed Bridges to score from third.
A pair of defensive miscues and a dropped fly ball that let two runs score in the bottom half of the inning allowed the Skyhawks to score four runs of their own and tie the game at 4-4.
Murray State(3-11, 0-3 OVC) rebounded in the second, beginning with a Megan Glosser triple to right field. The Racers loaded the bases as Bradley was hit by a pitch and Buch walked after Bradley stole second base. They got a run of the inning as Mattocks walked to bring in a run, but a pair of consecutive strike outs ended the scoring threat.
UT Martin again took the lead in its half of the second. Leadoff batter Leah Taylor homered to right field and gave the Skyhawks a 6-5 lead after two.
UT Martin (13-8, 3-0) put the game out of reach in the third inning, batting around the order as it sent 12 batters to the plate. The seven run inning was highlighted by a three run home run from Amanda Brandenburg as the Skyhawks took a commanding 13-5 advantage.
The Racers got one more run in the fifth inning as Buch scored from third on a base hit from Bridges.
Murray State jumps out of conference action this week, traveling to Birmingham, Ala., for a Tuesday doubleheader against UAB. First pitch takes place at noon.
