Murray State Advances to Face SIU in MVC
The Murray State Racers (27-21, 17-9 MVC) defeated the Evansville Purple Aces (21-29, 12-15 MVC) in run-rule fashion to claim a victory in the opening round of the 2026 Missouri Valley Conference Softball Championship in Carbondale, Illinois.
After both teams were scoreless in the opening inning, Katy Huels put the Racers on the board first with a single in the bottom of the second that scored Allie Waldron to give the Racers a 1-0 lead.
The Navy & Gold followed that up with three more runs in the third. Kynadee Warner scored first on a wild pitch before Bailey Broemmer scored two runs with a single that glanced off the end of the glove of an opposing infielder.
Evansville showed signs of life in the fourth with a solo homer by Niki Bode that put the Purple Aces on the board.
The Racer bats got back to work in the bottom of the fifth as Allie Waldron opened the inning with her sixth home run of the year, a solo shot to left-center. Katy Huels picked up her second RBI of the day on a single that scored Bailey Broemmer before Ailey Schyck scored her on a bunt single and advanced to second. Kynadee Warner picked up an RBI on a groundout to second, putting the Racers one run away from a run-rule win. Parker Holcombe delivered the knockout blow with a single to left field, as Ailey Schyck touched home for the final run in a 9-1 win.
Bre Haislip (12-8) went the distance in the circle, striking out three Evansville batters, allowing just three hits, and giving up one earned run across five innings.
"I think it's huge to get the win the way we did with the offense rounding into shape," said head coach Kara Amundson. "I thought Bre threw the best she has in weeks, and although we've had some shaky moments, defensively we made all the routine plays we needed to ... and anytime you can get any extra rest at this stage of the season it's huge, not just for Bre but for everybody."
