BOX SCORE
SIU Edwardsville (19-21, 11-6 OVC) hit three home runs Tuesday afternoon, including a first inning grand slam as the Cougars defeated Murray State 11-0 at Racer Field in the third and final game between the two teams this season.
SIUE pieced together a single and a pair of walks in the top of the first, all with two outs, before Briana Fulginiti cleared the bases with a grand slam to left field to take a 4-0 lead.
The Cougars hit another home run in the second, scoring two of their three runs in the inning on Paige Sheeder's first home run of the day as they increased their advantage to 7-0.
Sheeder hit another round-tripper in the top of the fourth down the left field to score all three SIUE runs in the inning.
Murray State (13-21, 6-11) threatened to cut into the SIU Edwardsville lead in the bottom of the third as Meghan Sims gave the Racers their first baserunner of the day on a hit-by-pitch. Taylor Wilson recorded the team's only hit of the game, a two-out single into right field that moved the runner to third. After a successful steal of second base by Wilson, both runners were left stranded in scoring position after SIU Edwardsville starter Erika Taylor struck out Megan Glosser to end the inning.
Taylor picked up with win for SIUE, throwing all five innings while giving up just a hit and a walk with seven strikeouts.
Chelsey Sullivan took the loss for Murray State, allowing three runs in two-thirds of an inning.
The Racers continue home action to begin the weekend, hosting Memphis in a non-conference doubleheader at 2 p.m. Friday, April 15.
