BOX SCORE
A goal in the final minute cost the Racers a chance at their first win in 2011 as Murray State soccer fell 2-1 to Western Carolina Sunday afternoon at the Western Kentucky Tournament in Bowling Green, Ky.
With the score tied at 1-1, the Catamounts (1-1) were able to get the game-winning goal with 40 seconds remaining in the contest as Kayla Sedgley sent in a cross from inside the box to seal the win.
Murray State (0-2) found itself trailing after after halftime for the second consecutive game as WCU scored in the 51st minute. The Racers rebounded quickly as freshman Julie Mooney scored her first career goal and the team's first of the season, cleaning up a loose ball in front of the net at 56:33 to tie the contest at 1-1.
MSU controlled the offensive pace on the afternoon, out-shooting Western Carolina 17 to 10. The Racers were able to put seven shots on net, and Mooney was one of two players to record multiple shot attempts with eight on the day.
"Today was another good learning experience, I was happy with how they came back to tie it up," head coach Beth Acreman said. "I saw that we continued to make improvements from Friday, but we need to take better care of things as a team on defense toward the end of games.
Mooney and Bronagh Kerins were selected to the WKU Tournament All-Tournament team.
Murray State returns home this week for the first time this season, welcoming Troy to Cutchin Field Thursday afternoon for the 2011 home opener. Kick off is scheduled for 1 p.m.
