Murray State women's soccer had an amazing season end Friday at the NCAA Tournament in a 1-0 defeat to the Ole Miss Rebels in Oxford, Mississippi.
Â
The loss for the Racers (16-5) ended the season with a record win total in the history of the Ohio Valley Conference.
Â
No. 24 Ole Miss (14-5-2) hit the Racers with a lightning strike when Gretchen Harknett scored from the left side in the second minute to give the Rebels the quick 1-0 lead. It was the first time the Racers had trailed in a match since September.
Â
The Rebels outshot the Racers 11-2 in the first half. MSU's Marissa Burroughs had a good look at a header in the 45th minute that just went wide and would've been the equalizer.
Â
The 1-0 lead for the Rebels held to halftime.
Â
The Racers made some aggressive pushes on offense in the second half. Harriet Withers and Burroughs each had good looks at the goal but sent shots wide. Taylor Richerson had the Racers' lone shot on goal in the 67th minute.
Â
Ultimately, the Rebels were too much for the Racers and MSU lost 1-0.
Â
Freshman goalkeeper Alex Steigerwald gave quite the performance in keeping the Racers in the game. She racked up nine saves and only allowed the one goal.
Â
As the Racers season comes to a close, many players left their mark on the program. Senior Taylor Stevens wraps up her illustrious career as a Racer with the record for most minutes played. Steigerwald finishes her rookie season with an .889 save percentage, the MSU soccer single season record. Withers set the single season record for game winning goals with five and tied the single season record for points with 29.
Â
Murray State finishes the season 16-5, the best record in program history. The program also set the longest win streak record with 11.
Â
The Racers won the OVC regular season and OVC Tournament in the same season for the first time in program history. They played in their second NCAA Tournament. The first was in 2009 when MSU lost to Virginia Tech.
