Racers Fall in Pitcher's Duel to Evansville
4/12/2016 8:51:00 PM | Baseball
Evansville's Boomer Synek hit a solo home run in the top of the ninth to break a 1-1 tie as the Murray State baseball team fell to the Purple Aces Tuesday night at Reagan Field in a great pitcher's duel.
Racer starter Brad Boegel had a great outing on the mound, pitching six innings and scattering three hits to go along with a career-high nine strikeouts in taking the no-decision. Boegel allowed just one run in the contest. Tyler Anderson pitched three innings of relief in the loss and the only hit he surrendered was the homer to Synek. Anderson also struck-out four UE batters.
A Tyler Lawrence single through the right side of the infield in the bottom of the third put MSU (16-20) on the board first as Cody Gilbert came around from second to score. Gilbert reached earlier in the inning on a walk. That was all the offense the Racers could muster however, as they collected just five hits on the evening.
Caleb Hicks got a two-out single up the middle in the bottom of the ninth as MSU looked to rally, but pinch runner Aaron Bence was picked off at first base by reliever Brent Jurceka, who collected his fourth save on the night for the Purple Aces (18-13).
Kipp Moore went 2-for-2 with a walk at the plate to lead the night offensively for the Racers. Bauer got the other single for MSU on the night, extending his on-base streak to all 36 games this season.
MSU returns to action Wednesday night as the Racers travel to Saint Louis to face the Billikens in a 6 p.m. game.
