The Murray State Racers begin their run at the 2018 Ohio Valley Conference regular season championship when they host the Eastern Illinois Panthers in what is the Racers' 70th season as one of the founding members of the league in 1948. The Racers have won 24 titles, a league best, with the last one coming in 2015.
Froggy 103 (WFGS 103.7 FM) airs every MSU game with "Voice of the Racers" Neal Bradley calling the action in his 26th season. Former MSU assistant coach Kenny Roth provides commentary. Froggy103.com and GoRacers.com has free online streaming audio. Streaming video is available at OVCDigitalNetwork.com.
The Racers have won their last nine OVC openers after a 92-83 home win over Tennessee a year ago. MSU is 52-18 (.718) overall in OVC openers and 31-5Â (.861) at home. MSU's last loss was in 2007 at home to Eastern Kentucky 59-58.
The Racers are 24-3 all-time against EIU at home and just last season, the Panthers snapped a five-game losing streak at the CFSB Center with a win in the final week of the season. Prior to that, the Racers won 10 in a row after losing in 2002. Overall the Racers are 33-9 against EIU since they joined the OVC in 1997. MSU and EIU have met only one time in the league opener, as the Racers won at home in 2006 by 53-50 score.
MSU went 1-1 last week in two terrific games with Auburn (Dec. 19) and Detroit Mercy (Dec. 22). In the first visit of an SEC team to Murray since 1993, the Racers took Auburn to the wire before falling 81-77. Moral victories aside, the game was a definite confidence booster. MSU went on the road last Friday and led wire-to-wire in an 81-72 win at Detroit Mercy.
The improvement the Racers have shown this season from last has come basically from fewer fouls, fewer made baskets by opponents and more defensive rebounds on those misses. Coming into the EIU/SIUE week, the Racers are ranked in the top-50 in seven NCAA D-I stat categories and in most of those, they're first or second in the OVC.
This week begins the first of four-straight at home to start the OVC season for the Racers. SIUE comes in Saturday with Southeast Missouri and UT Martin visiting next week on Dec. 28 and 30.
