Racers Fall In Road Match To Missouri State
10/10/2024 7:59:00 PM | Women's Soccer
Mary Hardy scored her team-leading fifth goal of the season.
The Racers dropped their Thursday afternoon contest to the Missouri State Bears, 2-1, at the Betty and Bobby Allison South Stadium in Springfield, Missouri.
The Bears jumped ahead early with a goal in the eighth minute, but were held scoreless on their next five shots in the first half.
After a back-and-forth defensive battle, junior Mary Hardy fired a shot from the left side just outside of the goalkeeper's box to equalize on an assist from junior Megan Wilson in the 73rd minute. Hardy netted her fifth goal of the season and 18th of her career, and Wilson dished her first assist of the season and third of her career. It was her first assist since 2022.
Four minutes later, Missouri State retook the lead to secure their victory with a goal delivered on a corner kick.
Seven of Murray State's starters saw the full 90 minutes in Thursday's contest. Hardy took three total shots and Wilson placed both of her shots taken on target.
The Racers return to the home pitch at Cutchin Field on Thursday, October 17 to host the Indiana State Sycamores at 3 p.m. CT. to kick off their final home weekend of the regular season.

Head Coach Matt Lodge on his team's performance Thursday afternoon:
"I thought for the first time in conference play, we just got beat by the better team. We're six games in—I think the first five games we've been the better team, and we've just been a little unfortunate. Today, I can hold my hands up and say we got beat by a better team on the day. I truly believe we are still a very good team, but they finished their chances well. I thought we fought hard. We created enough to maybe stay in the game, but I think [Griselda Revolorio] really kept us in that game and I thought Tori [Schrimpf] and Morgan [Bodker] at center back did a great job. It was a great finish from Mary as well. There were glimpses. I don't think it helped us yesterday when we really didn't get to train, but it is what it is. We have to roll with the punches. I think we have to dust ourselves off, take the bye for Sunday off and get ready for a homestead next week.
Â
Head Coach Matt Lodge on if the Racers held to one goal was due to Missouri State's defense or missed opportunities:
"I think it's the first time we've been held under 12, 13 shots in conference, so I think testament to—I think more so their defending from the front. I thought we caused their back four problems, but I think their midfield and how they defend from the front is a testament to keeping us out. But, they kind of dominated in some areas and we've got to watch film and decipher that a little bit."
Â
Head Coach Matt Lodge's mindset seeking Murray State's first win in conference play:
"Every game is a new game. We're back at home. We are now playing for our lives and we've got to get ourselves in the tournament, and there's no better place to do than at home to do that."
