Senior Paola Campigotto advanced to the title match in doubles and singles for the third-straight season.
The Racers showcased their skill on the tennis court over the weekend at the Missouri Valley Conference Fall Individual Championships at the XS Tennis and Education Foundation in Chicago, Illinois. Murray State secured three individual championships and made an appearance in eight out of the nine possible title matches.
Every competing Racer made it to a championship match in their respective brackets, going a combined 20-7 as a team.
"We couldn't ask for a better tournament from this young group," head coach Jorge Caetano said. "We competed our hearts out, winning three championships and advancing to the championship match in eight of the nine flights, which shows the strength of our team. Every single one of our players got to experience what it feels like to compete for an MVC title and this is going to be extremely valuable come the MVC regular season and tournament in the spring."
Senior Paola Campigotto secured a Doubles Flight 3 championship with teammate Varya Alexeyeva, winning 8-6 over Illinois State's Elena Jankulovska and Nuria Sanz. Campigotto also clinched a Singles Flight 4 victory over UIC's Dongke Liu in straight sets (6-2, 6-1). The Joinville, Brazil native won all of her singles matches in straight sets and did not lose more than four games in a single set throughout singles bracket play.
In Murray State's three years as members of the MVC, Campigotto is now a five-time individual champion with consecutive doubles titles and three-straight singles titles. After the weekend, she is now 16-1 overall in individual play with her only loss coming in the 2022 Flight 2 Doubles Championship match. Alexeyeva also secured her first MVC individual title.
Sophomore Yuna Kadowaki secured her first career Missouri Valley individual championship with a Singles Flight 5 victory over Jankulovska. Kadowaki won the first set 7-6 (8-6) before her title was clinched due to her opponent retiring from play. The Nishinomiya, Japan native retired both of her opponents en route to the title in straight sets.
Sophomore Valeria Chaikovskaia saw her 11-match winning streak snapped after falling to UIC's Mayu Ushio in the Singles Flight 1 title match. It was her first loss since April 20 at Valparaiso, a loss she avenged in the semifinal round over Valpo's Moira Silva in a three-set battle. The Togliatti, Russia native is now 9-1 this fall with two tournaments remaining on the fall schedule.
"I am extremely proud of Yuna, Varya and Paola for their titles but even prouder of the team as a whole for supporting each other and never giving up," Caetano added. "We definitely got better and grew a lot as a team this weekend."
The Racers return to play for the ITA Ohio Valley Regionals in Murfreesboro, Tennessee on October 10-14.
