Smith Leads Racers at MVC Championship

The MSU duo put their names into the top-5 all-time at MSU for the 8K distance
Freshman Liz Smith placed 32nd for the Racers to lead the team with a time of 21:34.
The day marked a fall of competition for the Racers in which they had turned in four-straight top-5 finishes. Smith's effort gave her the second-best 6K time in school history as she passed seven competitors in the second half of the race. Alyssa Moore is now fifth on the MSU 6K list and Breanna Day beat her PR by 18 seconds. Jocelyn Host also had a PR t the MVC meet.
"Overall our women's team executed a great race today," said Jordan Johnston, MSU coach. "I think they were smart and strategic in the first 2k and that's what allowed them to have such a strong second half. All but one of our women either moved up or maintained their position from 3k through the finish which is really impressive. Liz Smith and Alyssa Moore were the big MVP's today with their huge lifetime PRs and top-10 school history performances. It is so exciting to have a freshman see success right away in her college career and I know that she has so much room to grow. I can't wait to see what her future holds. Alyssa finished her freshman cross country season on a bit of a low note last year and she let that unfinished business drive her to an amazing summer of training and I am very happy to see her work pay off today. And Hope Ware also deserves recognition for her race today. To have her run a lifetime PR after a surgery that left us questioning if she would ever get back to what she once was is an incredible thing. She has been very patient and trusted the process all while going through our demanding nursing program. It's commendable what she has done. Collectively I think that the program is heading in the right direction. I hope that the team can celebrate their individual success at this championship but ultimately we need to view this as a step towards what we know Murray State Cross Country is ultimately capable of."Â
