Murray State saw a runner-up finish at the Missouri Valley Outdoor Conference Championships for the second-straight year.
"Overall, the team goal is to always come home with a championship, but this second place didn't come with a lack of effort," head coach Adam Kiesler said. "All the credit goes to Indiana State. To host, have graduation and win isn't easy and they did it all."
Championship Sunday was highlighted by the Racers' 4x400-meter relay team comprised of Simone Joseph, Kayla Bell, Chelby Melvin and Lucia Herrero Yanez securing a conference victory with a record time of 3:36.88. Their time set a new meet record, facility record and outdoor program record.
Faith Bostick was named conference champion in the 200-meter, running a new personal best of 23.70 and winning by just over 1/10th of a second. The senior also saw a second-place finish in the 100-meter with a time of 11.69.
Alyssa Williams finished in the top five alongside Bostick in the 100-meter, setting a PR of 11.74 while finishing fourth in the event. Williams' other top-five finish came in the triple jump, where she saw a third-place podium finish with 11.82 meters. Joining Williams in the triple jump competition was Jazmyn Owens, who bested her previous record to a distance of 11.25 meters while finishing seventh to add two points to her team's total.
Williams was also on the 4x100-meter relay team that saw a runner-up finish with teammates Jenna Pauly, Herrero Yanez and Bostick. The quartet ran 45.29 to finish just 4/10ths of a second behind Illinois State.
Melvin and Anouk Krause-Jentsch took the top two spots of the 400-meter hurdles, with both runners seeing personal bests. Melvin bested her current school record to 57.57, and Krause-Jentsch set her new best by nearly two seconds to a time of 59.74.
"We had a lot of young people step up this weekend to pick a few low spots," Kiesler added. "We are super proud of them and how they competed in a hostile environment."
Melvin also was the runner-up in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 13.59 to score eight points for the Racers. Pauly also finished seventh to earn two points for MSU in the event with a time of 14.21.
Joseph and Bell each finished among the top eight in the 400-meter. Joseph finished fourth, lowering her best to 54.95 and scoring five points for Murray State. Bell added three points in the event after finishing sixth with a time of 55.50.
"We will miss our seniors so much for everything they have done for this program," Kiesler said. "They all helped to get our program to this level, and they all did an amazing job this weekend at their last championships."
The Racers now look ahead to the NCAA East Regional Preliminary Rounds at the University of Kentucky in Lexington, Kentucky.
