The Racers had their best meet of the fall as they finished two spots higher than expected at The Valley Championship
The Murray State women's cross country team turned in a fourth-place finish at the Missouri Valley Conference Championship on at Angel Mounds State Park in Evansville, Indiana.
Â
Projected for a sixth-place finish based on previous performances this fall, the Racers rallied in the final clicks of the 6K event to get their best finish in their fourth appearance at the MVC Championship.
Â
Ruth Kimutai and Molly Robertson each broke the MSU program 6K record that was set in 2016 by Vallery Korir with a time of 21:24 at the NCAA Regional in Terre Haute, Ind.
Â
Kimutai, a senior, posted a 21:18 and Robertson, a freshman, had a time of 21:20.
Â
Kimutai finished 10th overall and became MSU's first All-MVC performer in MVC Cross Country, while Robertson and Liz Smith earned MVC Honorable Mention honors on finishes of 11th and 12th place.
Â
Smith, Jocelyn Host, Abigail Crask and Ainsley Smith all posted personal bests, making MSU Coach Jordan Johnston very proud.
Â
"I knew that it was going to be close with Drake and then Northern Iowa on if we could catch and pass them," Johnston stated. "We broke the race up into segments with different tasks to focus on at each kilometer and the way everyone executed their individual race strategies, was amazing. Autumn Egleston was a huge piece as our No. 5 runner and she handled that pressure with such confidence. Abigail ran a great race as our No. 6 and I'm so glad I get another three years with her because she has tremendous potential. The races Ruth and Molly ran were more than we could have dreamed of. We talk a lot about how our top finishers can change from one meet to the next and it's great to see them as well as Liz and Jocelyn constantly support each other during the races."
Â
Now the Racers look forward to the NCAA Southeast Regional Championship (Nov. 14) in Charlottesville, Virginia.
