The second NCAA Tournament appearance for the Racers comes after winning the MVC Tournament Sunday afternoon
The Murray State Racers women's basketball team learned of their assignment for the NCAA Tournament during Selection Sunday activities at the CFSB Center in Murray, Kentucky.
A few hours after winning the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament championship in Evansville, the team arrived home in Murray to get the news that they'll meet the Iowa Hawkeyes on Saturday, March 22 in Norman, Oklahoma. The game time and television designation will be announced later.
The Racers (25-7) were given a No. 11 seed and Iowa (22-10) is a No. 6 seed and they'll be meeting for the first time. A Murray State win would advance them into a Monday second round game against the winner of No. 3 Oklahoma and No. 13 Florida Gulf Coast.
Making their second NCAA Tournament appearance in school history, the first and last time the Racers played in the NCAAs was under Coach Jody Adams when the Racers were a No. 14 seed and played No. 3 Duke in College Park, Maryland in a 78-57 loss. Murray State Hall of Famer and retired No. 23 jersey, Ashley Hayes, led the Racers that day with 26 points on 6-of-12 from the 3-point line.
The Iowa Hawkeyes received votes this week in the Associated Press poll, won 22 games and finished eighth in the Big 10 Conference at 10-8.
For the Racers, it has been a remarkable 2024-25 season in which the team has risen to a No. 51 NCAA Net ranking prior to Sunday's 83-62 victory over the Belmont Bruins to take The Valley tournament title at the Ford Center in Evansville, Indiana.
Rising to No. 1 in NCAA D-I scoring prior to Sunday's win, the Racers enter the NCAA's as the highest scoring team in the nation with an average of 87.8 points per game.
MSU enters the week with 25 wins, a program record and they're riding a 10-game winning streak that is one from the program record of 11 set in 2009.
