The Murray State Hall of Famer returns to MSU as part of the 1999-00 ring ceremony
Murray State Athletics announced plans to retire the jersey of Racer Basketball great Isaac Spencer, when the Racers host Bellarmine (Dec. 6) at the CFSB Center in Murray, Kentucky.
Â
Spencer and his teammates are coming back to the MSU campus to receive championship rings from the 1999-00 season.
"I am proud to be a Racer and I always will be," Spencer said. "I want to thank AD Nico Yantko and the Murray State Hall of Fame committee for this honor. Those days of playing for the Racers are still among the cherished days of my life, and I'll always be appreciative of my coaches and teammates."
Â
Wearing No. 31, Spencer competed in the glorious decade of the late 1990's and into the 2000's and stands as one of the top multi-tool talents that have ever worn the Blue and Gold.
Â
"Isaac Spencer is truly one of the greatest players to ever wear our uniform," head coach Ryan Miller said. "It's a grand occasion when we get the opportunity to honor the greats of Racer Basketball. Isaac is part of the fabric that has made this program among the best in the game for decades and I'll look forward to having him and the 1999-00 team back on campus."
Playing for Coach Mark Gottfried and Coach Tevester Anderson from 1997-01, Spencer was one of the kingpins that produced a overall record of 96-31 (.732), a mark of 57-13 (.814) in Ohio Valley Conference games and a home record of 49-5 (.907) as he helped close out Racer Arena and open the CFSB Center.
"We are thrilled to honor the remarkable career of Isaac Spencer on the same night we celebrate one of the great teams in Racer Basketball history," Director of Athletics Nico Yantko said. "Isaac is extremely deserving of this special recognition, and we look forward to a tremendous night highlighting one of the greatest Racers to come through our storied men's basketball program."
Â
With Spencer, the Racers won three OVC regular season titles and made two trips to the NCAA Tournament.
Â
Spencer's career still holds up as he is second at MSU in scoring (2,248 points), second in made field goals (823), fourth in made free throws (525), fifth in rebounds (962), 13th in assists (352). After his final game in 2001, Spencer was the only Racer to end his career in the top-10 in scoring, rebounding and assists.
Â
He was inducted into the Murray State Hall of Fame in 2014.
Â
Murray State Athletics previously announced plans to honor men's basketball legend Lamont Sleets with the retirement of his No. 10 jersey when the Racers host Mississippi Valley State on Friday (Nov. 7) in the season opener.
