Murray State fell in straight sets to Belmont Thursday at Racer Arena.
The Racers (2-17, 0-7 MVC) ran into a Belmont team that is on a roll in conference play, winning six of its last seven matches, and ultimately dropped sets 16-25, 19-25 and 21-25.
Murray State jumped out to an early advantage in the first set, as Paige Brock racked up back-to-back service aces to start the match, extending her season total to 14. From there, Murray State held on to its lead behind three kills from Maezi Snyder before the Bruins took their first advantage of the set, one they would not relinquish. Fueled by two blocks from Lucy Kay, Belmont put together a devastating 8-0 run in the set, which put a comeback out of reach for the Racers.
The second set started as a back-and-forth affair, with the two sides trading points through four ties before Belmont began to pull away. The Bruins strung together a 4-0 run on Mya Bolton's serve, including two aces, to go up 13-6 and force a Murray State timeout. The Racers responded, as Snyder and Anne Makowski combined for 12 kills in the set to keep Murray State within striking distance. A Makowski kill and service ace pulled the Racers within 21-18, and Alexa Watts fought off the first set point with a kill, but Belmont closed the frame on an Emily Warmenhoven kill.
Murray State came out swinging in the third set, rattling off six straight points behind the serve of Sam Nelson to take an 8-3 lead. Lily Evans added a pair of kills to stretch the advantage to 10-6, but the Bruins clawed back with four straight points to knot the set at 10-10. Belmont took a 14-11 lead before Makowski answered with back-to-back kills and Brock delivered her third ace of the match to tie it at 14. The Bruins responded with a 4-0 run, and despite a late push from the Racers that saw Watts, Evans, and Mija Pristovnik record consecutive kills to cut the deficit to 20-19, Belmont closed out the match with a Brenna Kauffeld kill.
Makowski led the Racers with 12 kills and a team-high 13 points, while Snyder added 10 kills and Evans chipped in eight on .333 hitting. Evans' .333 hitting percentage led all Racers, her third time doing so in the last four matches. Paige Brock ran the majority of the game at setter, racking up a team-high 28 assist along with three service aces and six digs, while Nelson anchored the back row with a match-high 16 digs.
Murray State will return home Friday at 5 p.m. to take on SIU.
