Murray State pushed Valparaiso in all three sets Friday at the Athletics-Recreation Center but came up short, falling 25-23, 25-23, 25-21.
The Racers (2-15, 0-5 MVC) fell behind 3-0 to open the match but answered against the Beacons (11-7, 3-3 MVC), using a 3-0 run that included a block from Alexa Watts and Lily Evans to even the score at 13. An Evans kill gave Murray State a 15-14 lead in a frame that featured six ties and two lead changes, and Paige Brock's kill later knotted the set at 23 before Valparaiso scored the final two points to take the opener.
Sophomore Anne Makowski continued her breakout season with a match-high 18 kills on a season-best .302 clip, leading the Racers in kills for the 13th time in 17 matches and pushing her past the 200-kill mark for the first time in her career. Evans added eight kills, an ace and two blocks, while freshman Maezi Snyder chipped in seven kills on a team-best .353 hitting percentage, surpassing 100 kills on the season in the process.
The Navy & Gold showed fight again in the second set, erasing an early 6-2 Valparaiso advantage as kills from Makowski and Snyder helped tie the score at eight. The Beacons stretched the lead to 20-16, but Makowski, who had seven kills in the frame, pulled Murray State within one at 22-21 and again at 24-23 before Valparaiso closed out the set.
Valparaiso jumped out to a 10-2 lead in the third set, but the Racers responded with a 4-0 run behind back-to-back service aces from freshman libero Ada Tamturk and a pair of Makowski kills. Murray State made another push late in the frame, as a Makowski kill and two Beacon attack errors cut the deficit to 21-20, and the Racers got within one once more at 22-21 before Valparaiso scored the final three points to complete the sweep.
Brock ran the offense for all three sets and finished with 35 assists and seven digs, while Tamturk, who has played in all 61 of Murray State's sets this season, led the Racers with 10 digs. Sam Nelson added eight digs off the bench, and Mija Pristovnik finished with five kills and six digs.
Murray State hit .228 as a team, well above its .180 season average, but Valparaiso hit .310 and held a 6-2 edge in blocks to extend its lead in the all-time series to 11-2.
The Racers will wrap up their road trip Saturday at UIC as they continue Missouri Valley Conference play.
