MIAMI – The Murray State men's basketball team closed preseason action with an 86-79 road victory at FIU on Thursday night thanks to a second half push on both ends of the floor.
The Racers, who finished the preseason 3-0 with wins over Wichita State, UIW and FIU, now get set for the real thing, tipping off the 2026-27 regular season on November 2 against Tennessee State as part of the Field of 68 Opening Day Marathon. Murray State then opens its home schedule inside the newly renovated and reimagined CFSB Center on November 7 against Northwestern State.
On Thursday night, Murray State trailed by five at the break after shooting just 37 percent as a group, but bounced back to connect at 53 percent in the second half while turning the defense up and forcing 11 second half turnovers for 13 points off those giveaways. Down eight with 12 minutes to play, the Racers ripped off 10 straight points in just over two minutes to take the lead. After FIU pulled to within two at 73-71 with 4:27 to play, the Racers extended their advantage with five straight points at the free throw line and then closed the night strong at the line despite one final FIU push to secure the win.
Roman Domon led the way for Murray State with a game-best 29 points, aided in large part to his 21-of-24 mark at the free throw line after drawing 15 fouls over his 32 minutes of action. Domon just missed out on a double-double with nine rebounds, including seven on the defensive end, and added a pair of steals and an assist.
Kaden Magwood scored eight of his 10 points in the second half as the Racers' other double-digit scorer, while Christian Jones finished with nine points and Brigham Rogers turned in eight points and nine rebounds of his own.
Murray State finished the night shooting 43 percent overall and 30 percent from deep with seven three-pointers, adding a team mark of 33-of-46 from the free throw line, thanks in large part to Domon's line at the stripe. FIU shot 43 percent for the night as well, connecting on five threes for a 39 percent clip while going 73 percent at the line, however, they only went to the line 11 total times.
Trey Beamer led FIU with 21 points and Seydina N'Diaye added 12 points of his own, as both finished with a team-best seven rebounds in the loss.
