Murray State Falls to South Dakota State 42-9
BROOKINGS, S.D. — Kicker Tyler Dorn hit 3 field goals, including a 51-yarder, as the Murray State Racers fell to the South Dakota State Jackrabbits 42-9 on a windy Saturday afternoon in Brookings, S.D.
The Racers (1-7, 0-4 MVFC) continue to seek their first Missouri Valley Football Conference win, while the Jackrabbits (6-2, 3-1 MVFC) returned to their winning ways after falling to North Dakota last week.
The contest opened with the two teams trading punts before the Jacks got the scoring started on a 9-yard rushing touchdown by Josiah Johnson, and added to their lead with 1 second left in the first quarter with an 18-yard passing touchdown from Chase Mason to Grahm Goering that made it 14-0.
The Racers got on the board in the second quarter when Tyler Dorn knocked through the first field goal of the season for Murray State, a 33-yarder that bounced off the left upright and in. After the Jackrabbits pushed the lead to 20-3 on a pair of field goals, Dorn converted once again, this time from 30 yards out.
Following another Jackrabbit touchdown, Dorn hit his third field goal of the second quarter, a 51-yarder that made it 27-9 at the half.
South Dakota State added a touchdown in both the third and fourth quarters, making the final score 42-9.
The Racers were outgained 434-249 in total yardage, putting up 174 yards through the air and 75 on the ground. Quarterback Baxter Wright went 21-of-34 for 174 yards. Jawaun Northington led the rushing attack with 45 yards on 10 carries, while Tyrell Campbell added 25 yards. Trey Firestone led the team with 6 catches and a career-high 78 yards, while Jaxon Potter had 5 catches for 63 yards.
Tyler Dorn ended the day 3-of-4 with a career-long 51-yarder, snapping the Racers' 8-game streak without a made field goal. Long-snapper Cooper Ford had a fumble recovery that set up Dorn's 33-yard field goal.
Ryan McCall led the Racers with 9 tackles, 3 tackles for loss, and 1 sack, all career highs. Dylan Rowsey had 8 tackles, all solo, and Jayden Walker continued to be a backfield threat with 2 sacks on the day. Tomorris Green also had a career high with 9 tackles on the day.
