Murray State returns Sunday against Rutgers
The Murray State Racers (4-5) split a pair of games on Saturday at The Snowman - Alex Wilcox Memorial Tournament at Nusz Park in Starkville, Mississippi.
Game One: Rutgers 8, Murray State 5
The Racers faced the Scarlet Knights of Rutgers in the morning game on Saturday. The Scarlet Knights got things going in a hurry, putting up four runs in the opening inning. However, the Racers struck right back in the second with four of their own. The first run for Murray State came when Allie Waldron scored on a throwing error by the Rutgers catcher. Kenley Minor added another one on an RBI single up the middle that scored Courtney Sandy, before scoring herself on a play that saw Reagan Towns ground out. Katy Huels delivered the equalizer with an RBI single to first base, tying the game at 4-4.
Rutgers stayed hot through the third and fourth innings, scoring a pair of runs in each inning and putting the Racers behind 8-4 entering the fifth inning. The Racers looked to chip away at the deficit as Waldron scored again on a fielder's choice to make it 8-5, however they were unable to add any runs in the final two innings.
Katy Huels went 2-3 at the plate with an RBI, Kenley Minor went 2-4 with an RBI, and Bailey Broemmer and Reagan Towns each added an RBI as well.
Hailey Brereton got the loss after giving up one earned run as the starter. Emily Siurek and Karlye Graber pitched three innings each.
Game Two: Murray State 6, North Texas 1
Murray State faced North Texas in Saturday's nightcap. The Mean Green scored what would be their only run early, on an RBI triple down the line that put them ahead 1-0.
It was all Racers from there. The scoring started in the second inning as Bailey Broemmer put up her first run of the evening by sliding home after a wild pitch. She added another one in the fourth inning, this time with a solo home run to left field, her first of the season.
Ailey Schyck added a homer of her own in the fifth inning, this one a two-run shot to left field that put Murray State ahead 4-1. She wasn't done after that, as in the seventh inning she scored Kenley Minor on an RBI single to center field before stealing home herself to add the final run and make it 6-1.
Bre Haislip (1-0) pitched a complete game, tossing six strikeouts across seven innings and allowing just one earned run and no walks.
Schyck went 3-3 at the plate on the day with three RBI, and Bailey Broemmer went 2-3, including her solo home run. Kenley Minor scored a pair of runs and drew one walk.
