Racers Fall to No. 19 Kentucky in Midweek Clash

LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Murray State baseball team jumped out to an early lead Tuesday, but No. 19 Kentucky responded with 14 runs to secure a 14-4 run-rule victory in seven innings at Kentucky Proud Park.
The loss snapped a four-game winning streak for the Racers (16-9, 3-0 MVC), who moved to 3-8 on the road and 3-3 in midweek contests this season.
Murray State struck first in the top of the opening frame when Conner Cunningham laced an RBI single to center. However, the Wildcats (20-4, 4-2 SEC) answered immediately, plating three runs in the bottom of the first and four more in the second to take control.
Cunningham remained a bright spot for the Racer offense. The outfielder drove in three runs on the afternoon, marking his second consecutive game with three RBIs. He also accounted for the team's lone extra-base hit with an RBI double in the sixth.
Kingsley Guthrie, who entered the game in the fourth inning, provided the final Racer run with an RBI single to left field in the sixth.
Colby Ott joined Cunningham with a multi-hit game, his fifth of the season.
On the mound, Murray State utilized seven different pitchers. Parker Patterson provided the longest relief outing of the day, tossing 2.2 hitless innings and allowing only one unearned run. As a staff, the Racers struggled with command, surrendering 11 walks in the contest.
Kentucky now leads the all-time series 25-8.
The Racers will look to regain their momentum this weekend as they travel to Peoria, Illinois, for a three-game Missouri Valley Conference series against Bradley.
