CHICAGO, Ill. - Murray State baseball dropped the opening game of its weekend series at UIC on Friday, falling 3-1. The Racers (21-13, 7-3 MVC) have now dropped three consecutive conference games.
Nic Schutte delivered a strong performance on the mound, tossing seven innings and allowing three earned runs. Schutte struck out seven batters and walked two, though he was still tagged with the loss in the series opener.
Luke Mistone and Kainen Jorge led the offense with two hits apiece. Mistone's first-inning hit preceded a double from Kristofer Hokenson that plated the first run of the game and gave the Racers an early 1-0 lead.
UIC (10-20-1, 5-5 MVC) answered with two runs in the second inning, capitalizing on a throwing error and a balk. The Murray State offense was held hitless over the next five innings as the Flames maintained the lead.
The Racers threatened late in the contest by putting two runners on base in the ninth inning, but the UIC defense held firm to close out the victory. Murray State moves to 5-7 against the Flames since joining the Missouri Valley Conference.
The two teams meet again tomorrow for Game 2 of the weekend series. First pitch at Curtis Granderson Stadium is scheduled for 2:05 p.m.
