Racers Fall Twice Friday at USI Invitational

Murray State (0-2) suffered a pair of losses on Friday during the opening day of the USI Invitational in Evansville, Indiana.
The Racers opened the season against host Southern Indiana (1-0), with the Screaming Eagles narrowly taking the first set, 25-22. Murray State responded in the second, recording 15 kills and hitting .387 as a team in a 25-16 win to even the match.
Southern Indiana answered by taking the third and fourth sets, 25-15 and 25-16, respectively, to secure the 3-1 victory. The Screaming Eagles finished with 57 kills while hitting .263, compared to 39 kills and a .187 hitting percentage for Murray State.
Anne Makowski led the Racers with 18 kills while hitting .304 and adding nine digs. Paige Brock recorded 33 assists, eight digs and two service aces, while Lily Burnett added a team-high five blocks.
Murray State returned to the court later Friday against Northern Illinois (1-1). The Racers battled through two close sets before the Huskies pulled away for a 3-0 victory.
The Racers held a 15-12 advantage in the opening set before NIU battled back to take it, 25-21. Murray State then posted its best offensive set of the match in the second, recording 15 kills and hitting .283, but fell 25-22. The Huskies closed out the match with a 25-16 win in the third.
Makowski once again paced Murray State with 12 kills, bringing her total to a team-high 30 kills on the day. Burnett added eight kills while hitting .412, and Alexa Watts finished with six kills on a .353 hitting percentage. Brock led the Racers with 21 assists and 11 digs while adding two service aces. Ada Tamturk added 10 digs and eight assists as Murray State finished the match with 32 kills, 38 digs and five total blocks.
The Racers will wrap up play at the USI Invitational on Saturday against Eastern Michigan, with opening serve scheduled for 11 a.m. CT at Liberty Arena.
