Racers Drop Opening MVC Match at Drake

Murray State lost its conference opener to Drake Friday at the Knapp Center in three sets, falling 25-13, 25-18, 25-19.
The Racers (2-11, 0-1 MVC) went toe-to-toe with the Bulldogs (6-8, 1-1 MVC) early in the first set, with the score tied at seven. However, a 12-0 Drake run gave the Bulldogs control of the frame, an advantage they would not relinquish on their way to a 25-13 win.
The Navy & Gold showed fight in the second set, taking an early 5-2 lead before the Bulldogs battled back. The set featured three lead changes and seven ties, with neither side able to create much separation early. After Murray State evened the score at nine, Drake used a 4-0 run to take the lead for good before eventually closing out the set, 25-18.
Lily Evans continued her strong stretch after recording back-to-back 13-kill performances at the Trojan Classic. Evans finished with four kills against the Bulldogs, while Alexa Watts led Murray State with seven kills. Freshman Maezi Snyder added six kills while hitting a team-best .417, committing just one attack error on 12 swings.
Drake continued to push the tempo in the third set, jumping out to an 8-2 lead. However, the Racers battled back, cutting the deficit to three behind a kill from Watts and a service ace. Murray State made another push late in the frame, with back-to-back kills from Snyder and Watts cutting Drake's advantage to 22-18 before the Bulldogs closed out the match.
Mija Pristovnik added five kills while leading the Racers defensively with a match-high 15 digs. Katie Titus and Paige Brock split time at setter, recording 12 and 10 assists, respectively.
Murray State will wrap up its Iowa road trip Saturday at 1 p.m. CT at Northern Iowa.
