Marshall Gage Track History & Notes
Murray State’s track facilities stand out as some of the finest in the nation and the most outstanding in the region. The centerpiece is a state-of-the-art, nine-lane running surface housed within Roy Stewart Stadium, where it has been an integral feature since the venue opened in 1973. Initially laid with the same surfacing material used in the 1968 Mexico City Olympics, the venue is equipped for a full range of field events, including two long jump pits, a high jump area, a pole vault pit, and a shot put area inside the stadium, as well as discus, javelin, and hammer throw facilities located just inside the east wall. To top it off, the program enjoys a comfortable dedicated locker room on the stadium’s first floor.
In 1996, the track was officially named in honor of Marshall Gage, a standout alumnus who served as the primary donor and fundraiser for its first resurfacing project. Competing as a sprinter and hurdler for the Racers from 1957 to 1961, Gage made history as the only runner to win three events at the 1959 OVC Championship. His exceptional athletic achievements and ongoing loyalty to the program earned him an induction into the MSU Hall of Fame in 1965 and the Golden Horseshoe Award in 1995, and he remains a dedicated supporter of Murray State Track & Field today.
