Known as the fastest back in Murray State history, Walker was the most dangerous threat to come out of Murray State coach Fred Faurot’s backfield during the 1950s. he ran for more than 130 yards in three games during his career, with his best two games coming against the University of Louisville.
Walker made the most of his first varsity season, rolling to 406 yards in 42 carries – an eye-popping 9.6 yards per carry average.
Walker’s junior year began in grand style. With Murray opening the 1954 season on the road against Louisville, Walker darted through the Cardinal defense for a career high 166 yards in 10 carries, including several long runs, leading Murray to a 33-13 victory. That performance stands as the best Murray State rushing game of the 1950s.
Later that year against Austin Peay, Walker broke loose for a 97-yard scoring jaunt, still the MSU record for the longest scoring run.Â
The next year, Louisville again was the victim of Walker’s wrath, as he galloped 154 yards in a 33-14 win in Murray. He finished the season with a career-best 667 yards and was named All-Ohio Valley Conference.
Walker finished his career as Murray State’s all-time leading rusher with 1,669 yards, a record that stood for nine years. The Brownsville, Tenn. Native scored 20 touchdowns and one extra-point conversion, giving him 121 points for his career. (The Murray Ledger & Times, September 28, 1989, Homecoming ’89)
