To look at David Gourieux’s career pitching statistics, he appears to be a flame-thrower. Second all-time at MSU with 232 strikeouts – one per inning – and with a low hits-allowed-to-innings-pitched ratio, Gourieux wasn’t necessarily born with a golden arm.
“His greatest asset was his total command of three pitches,” said MSU baseball coach Johnny Reagan. “He was sort of a self-made pitcher and his work ethic was outstanding.
“He had about the best slider that I ever coached. He was a fearless competitor; the better the team, the better he was.”
Gourieux was twice selected All-Ohio Valley Conference – as a freshman in 1966 and as a senior in 1969 – and was three times named team Most Valuable Pitcher. He led the Thoroughbreds in strikeouts in each of his four years and three times led in wins, innings pitched and earned run average.
He finished his career with a 20-8 pitching log and a 2.25 ERA. Only one other MSU pitcher has more career strikeouts and only two have won more games. His career ERA also stands second all-time at MSU.
Gourieux continued his baseball career in the Atlanta Braves organization, reaching the high minors before retiring from the sport.
Gourieux currently resides in Paducah, Ky. (MSU Sports Information)
“I’ve had a lot of thrills in baseball,” Gourieux said. “But this is the biggest thrill of all.”
“David Gourieux had one of the finest work ethics of any player we ever had here,” MSU baseball coach Johnny Reagan said. (The Murray Ledger & Times, October 11, 1991, By David Ramey)
