- Inducted into the Murray State Hall of Fame in 1993
- Competed for the Racer football team from 1975-78.
- One of the most decorated Murray State football players of all time.
- Playing time with Racers began with a starting spot as a safety midway in freshman year.Â
- When finished playing in 1977, McFarland was the only Racer football player to earn All-OVC recognition three consecutive years (1975-77).Â
- As of 2022 the only other Racers to be All-OVC three times are: Ronnie Merritt, LB (1995, 1996, 1997), DeAngelo Nelson TE (2007, 2008, 2009), Casey Brockman, QB (2010, 2011, 2012) and Malik Honeycutt, RS (2018, 2020, 2021).
- Led MSU in tackles with 94 as a sophomore in 1976.
- His 12 career interceptions was tied with Dennis Jackson (1962-64) for second place behind only Bruce Walker’s 16 from 1974-76.
- Was the first Racer from any sport to be named Academic All-America in 1976).
- He also received the NCAA postgraduate scholarship in 1976.
- Played under Coach Bill Fergerson.
- McFarland graduated from Murray State in 1978 with a degree in biology.Â
- Earned his medical degree from the University of Louisville School of Medicine in 1982.
- Completed residency in orthopedic surgery at the Mayo Graduate School of Medicine in 1987.
- Joined Johns Hopkins University in 1992 where he created and directed the Johns Hopkins Division of Sports Medicine and Shoulder Surgery.
- A 1998 Murray State Distinguished Alumnus, McFarland has guided other professionals around the world in orthopedics.
- He also became the first chairman of orthopedic sports medicine at Johns Hopkins.
- He has also been honored as the Wayne H. Lewis Professor of Orthopedic and Shoulder Surgery and Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons and the American College of Sports Medicine.
- McFarland has been a pioneer in orthopedic medicine and has been included in more than 120 publications in his career.
- Dr. McFarland returns to MSU often to speak to students.
- He has authored or co-authored over 200 peer-reviewed articles and more than 20 book chapters.
- Dr. McFarland is a native of Paducah, Ky. and attended Tilghman High School.
- He was team captain for Blue Tornado when they won the 1973 Kentucky State Football Championship. He was a first-team All-State selection and named to the Louisville Courier Journal All-State Team.
