John Powless never lost a match in three years of varsity play at Murray State. In NCAA tournaments, Powless defeated some of the finest netters in the country.
He was the nucleus of two Ohio Valley Conference champions and a conference runner-up. In 1955 he won the class A singles at the OVC meet and teamed with Art Smith to take the doubles. The following year, he and Smith teamed to defeat another Murray team in championship finals. In 1957, he again won the singles and teamed with Brooks Dunoy to win the doubles.
Since leaving Murray in 1957, Powless has been coach of the United States Junior Davis Cup team, assistant basketball coach at Florida State University, and freshman basketball coach at the University of Cincinnati. He is presently tennis coach at the University of Wisconsin. (Murray State Alumnus, November 1965)
