MURRAY, Ky. - Addison Howell scored in the 77th minute with Murray State playing a player short and the Racers drew 2-2 with Belmont on Thursday afternoon at Cutchin Field, closing the regular season unbeaten in seven straight.
Murray State (4-8-6, 3-2-4 MVC) trailed twice and answered twice against Belmont (4-8-5, 3-5-1 MVC), and did the bulk of its work after losing Breece Bass to a red card in the 66th minute. After being charged with a red card, Bass is now ineligible to play in Sunday's MVC quarterfinal round at Indiana State.
"The resiliency is one of the best things about this group," Head coach Ben Madsen said, "and they continue to work hard… You can't question the fight and determination of this group in the second half."
The Racers took 18 shots, a season high, and 16 of them came in the second half, also a season high. They held 58 percent of possession, their largest share of the season.
Junior goalkeeper Isa De Santos Gomez made two saves in her third straight start, both before halftime.
Belmont went ahead in the 41st minute. Bass levelled in the 54th with an unassisted finish, her sixth goal of the season and 13th of her career, before the Bruins restored their lead 45 seconds later.
Howell struck in the 77th, also unassisted, for her second goal of the year, and Murray State pushed for a third to the final whistle, putting nine of its 18 attempts on target and winning a corner in the 90th minute. Howell led all players with five shots and four on goal.
"They continued to learn every day." Madsen said of the team's growth throughout the season, "they continueto fight, and it's not just one thing, the season's long. You're good at something at one pint, and then start to struggle and it. They continued to adjust and figure it out, and I couldn't be happier. It all starts with effort, commitment, and hard work at the end of the day."

The Racers advance to the Missouri Valley Championship quarterfinals and play at Indiana State on Sunday, Nov. 8, set for a 12 p.m. CST kickoff.
