EVANSVILLE, Ind. - Murray State scored three times in a span of nine minutes and 19 seconds early in the second half and beat Evansville 3-1 in steady rain Sunday afternoon at McCutchan Stadium, claiming its first road win of the season. The win extends Murray State's unbeaten streak to six and secures the Racers' spot in the MVC Women's Soccer Championships.
The Racers (4-8-5, 3-2-3 MVC) trailed at halftime after the Purple Aces (4-7-2, 2-5-1 MVC) scored in the 37th minute, then turned the match inside out in 10 minutes after the restart. Gabby Ramdeen levelled in the 48th, Breece Bass put Murray State ahead in the 53rd and Sami Wilson finished the scoring in the 57th. Murray State took nine of its 11 shots after the break and is unbeaten in six straight.
"It feels great to get a win on the road." head coach Ben Madsen said, "We've been battling all year and been so close. The response in the second half was great, I'm really proud of the effort we put forward today."
Junior goalkeeper Isa De Santos Gomez made four saves for her first career win, three of them after halftime as Evansville pushed for a way back into a match played on a soaked surface throughout.
The rain never let up and the second half turned on how quickly Murray State moved the ball in it. Ramdeen struck first, converting an Addison Howell delivery in the 48th minute for her third goal of the season. Five minutes later Howell found Bass for the go-ahead goal in the 53rd, the junior forward's fifth of the year and her third game-winner. Wilson made it 3-1 in the 57th with an unassisted finish, and Murray State won six corner kicks in the half.
Howell's two assists matched her total for the entire season to that point. Bass led the Racers with four shots and Ramdeen put both of her attempts on target.
The win moves Murray State to 12 points in Missouri Valley play and currently sit in fourth place in the Valley with one match remaining. Evansville leads the all-time series 7-5-3, though the Racers have not lost to the Purple Aces since 2012 and have won two of the last three meetings.
