The Murray State women's basketball team accomplished a feat that has not been seen since the 1988-89 campaign, recording over 100 points in two games during the season when the Racers (2-2, 0-0 Ohio Valley Conference) defeated Mid-Continent University 103-53 in the RSEC Tuesday evening.
All 13 of the MSU players that logged minutes scored at least one point during the victory, including a team-high 23 from senior Ashley Hayes. Joining Hayes with 10 or more points were seniors Angela Mullins and Amber Guffey (12 each), and freshman Rachael Isom, with 10.
“You could see the freshman starting to come out of their shell as the season has progressed,” said head coach Rob Cross. “Rachael Isom is going to be a good player, but she just needs to get more used to the speed of the college game. Games like these enable the freshman to get used to the speed.”
The opening three minutes of the game were close as the Racers started the opening stanza with a 4-0 run, but the Cougars (1-7) quickly tied the game at six with 17 minutes remaining. MSU took control from that point and started a 6-0 run over a minute-span that put the Racers ahead for good. MSU built its lead to as many as 28 points in the first half of play with several, seven, eight, and nine-point runs. In the final two minutes of the half, Mid-Continent made a push, with a 5-1 run to head into the locker room down 29-53.
The Cougars continued to fight at the start of the second half, dropping the lead to 20 with just under 16 minutes remaining in the game, with a 9-6 run. However the Racers continued to dominate and went on an 11-0 run over the next four minutes to push the lead back out to 32. MSU's largest run of the game started with 6:46 left in the second half and spanned the next four minutes. During the time frame the Racers out-scored Mid-Continent 13-0, for a 45-point advantage.
The Racers recovered from a poor shooting performance at
“One of the good things that I saw tonight is that we handled things the way we should have,” Cross said. “We took care of business on the boards and that is something that we have been focusing on all season.”
The Racers will now travel to
Notes: This was the fourth time in school history that a Racer team has recorded over 100 points twice in a single season...the 1988-89 squad accomplished the feat three times, while the team in 1987-88 and 1981-82 did it twice...junior Mallory Luckett has seven total rebounds for the Racers, with six coming on the offensive side of the court.
Quotes
“I am really happy with the effort of Paige Guffey, Mallory Schwab, and Mallory Luckett. Mallory had six offensive rebounds, Paige Guffey had six rebounds, and Mallory Schwab had five rebounds, those guards did a phenomenal job for us on the boards.”
