The Murray State softball team fell to Louisiana-Monroe, 13-5, in the second game of a two-game series at ULM Softball Complex. Junior Taylor Wilson tallied the Racers' (5-13, 1-1 OVC) first grand slam, but it was not enough to propel the team to victory as the Warhawks (11-11) combined for eight hits.
Junior Lauren Buch led the team with two hits, including a double in the bottom of the second inning. All four pitchers saw action in the circle for MSU, while sophomore Chelsey Sullivan earned the loss and recorded two strike outs.
The Warhawks got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first, with one run. However, MSU came right back in the top of second and took the lead, with five runs.
Freshman Ellyn Troup started off the inning with a single to left field and was advanced to second on a single from freshman Kaitlyn England up the left side. Junior Lauren Buch then hit a ball off the fence in right center for a double that scored Troup. Freshman Stephanie Edwards then drew the walk to load the bases for Wilson. Wilson then hit the first grand slam in Racer history over the left field fence to give MSU a 5-1 lead.
ULM then used a production inning in the bottom of the second, with five runs of its own to retake the lead, 6-5. The lead increased to 7-5 after the third inning. The Warhawks then added five more runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a 12-5 lead. ULM added a run in the bottom of the fifth to force the eight-run rule into play and end the game.
The Racers will travel to Birmingham, Ala., to play Samford, Wednesday, March 24 as the final road game of their Spring Break Trip. The double header is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. MSU will then return home to host OVC pre-season favorite Jacksonville State in the team's first home Ohio Valley Conference series at Racer Field at Murray-Calloway County Park. The first pitch of a double header, Saturday, March 27 will fly at 1 p.m., with a single game scheduled for 1 p.m., Sunday, March 28.
